Journey Into Fiction

Kara’s journey into paleontology began when she was just eight years old, on a visit to the Royal Ontario Museum. It was on this day that she first fell in love. Like many stories, it was love at first sight but in her case 'first sight' was a Tyrannosaur skeleton on display at the museum. The moment she saw it she was smitten, and life after that was never the same. Fast forward twenty years, Kara's dream of studying fossil life was fulfilled when she travelled to Kansas for graduate research and was given the chance to search for fossils. After days of digging, she and her professor unearthed the bones of two-9 million year old infant rhinoceroses.

Immersed in the past, knee deep in ribs and leg bones, she tapped into something she’d left behind in her youth—a love of fiction. And there, beneath the bright Kansas moon, she unleashed her creative side and returned to the world of writing. With the thrill of discovery primed in her blood, she started penning her first mystery novel, The Siamese Mummy. Much like herself, the book's main character straddled the planes of fact and fiction—a signature thread that would continue throughout each additional piece of work. From mystery to fantasy, humour to thriller, Kara attacked each project with the ferocity of one of the monsters she had created. Embracing the written word had never been so much fun. Wayward ghosts and precocious, talking cats became a way of life—a supernatural platform that ultimately led her into the realm of horror.
